Stand back a metre and pan slowly - even light helps
This first stage was on its second flight. It had already launched the Telstar 19 VANTAGE satellite, and here it is coming back again, after sending the Es'hail-2 satellite towards geostationary transfer orbit from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center on 15 November 2018.
There are two subjects in the frame and they sit opposite each other: the stage descending under one engine into a bed of sunlit vapour, and a faint rainbow curving through the left third of the sky. The four lattice panels standing clear at the top of the body are grid fins, which orient the rocket during reentry by moving its centre of pressure. Rays of light fan down and right from the engine through the vapour.
