A lenticular cloud over Otago, the Taieri Pet stands still on a wave in the air while the wind blows straight through it.

On 7 September 2024 a northwest wind poured over the Rock and Pillar Range in Otago and raised the cloud known locally as the Taieri Pet. Landsat 8 recorded it from 705 km up. The range is flat-topped, steeply sided and lies almost square across that wind, so a cloud of this kind is a common sight near Middlemarch.
The cloud's shadow runs down to the left across the tussock, longer than the cloud itself. It sits on the crest of a wave in the air, where rising flow cools and water vapour condenses, and holds its place while the wind blows through it. The stillness is deceptive: it marks strong winds high in the atmosphere. The name was in print by 1951.
